Hermenegild Peiker, Jesus Washes Peter's Feet

1998-2000
Church of St. Peter, Munich, Germany

This illustrates John 13:1-11, believed to be authored by the Apostle John, who stands here behind Jesus and Peter, who as usual is pictured as bald with a short, square beard. Peter's crossed-arms gesture is a traditional way of expressing humility, also seen sometimes in images of the Annunciation and Mary's Assumption and Coronation.

The fresco is a copy of the original, which was painted by Johann Baptist Zimmermann in 1753-56 and destroyed in World War II.
